Who is the Mukisa Community?
Mukisa Community Initiative International (Mukisa Community) is a non-profit organization that empowers communities to build healthy minds in pre-school children. Every child deserves access to quality care, yet vulnerable communities often lack the knowledge, activities, physical spaces, and tools necessary to support early childhood development. We strive to improve the physical, social, and emotional health of young children between the ages three (3) and five (5) years.
Our initial focus is on children in Kimwanyi, Uganda. As we grow, however, we are committed to promoting healthy early childhood development in other communities as well.
The organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors responsible for fundraising efforts, securing support through public contributions and grants, and overseeing the awarding and distribution of grants. The Mukisa Board works closely with funded entities to ensure programs deliver meaningful impact for children and foster broader community benefits.
Why Donate to MCII?
- Mukisa Community empowers communities to nurture healthy minds in pre-school children in underserved communities. In many of these communities, poverty, limited access to information, scarce resources, and underfunded social institutions create serious challenges for early childhood development.
Your support helps Mukisa Community fund programs that serve as vital resources for children, parents, guardians, and caregivers—especially families facing the greatest hardships.
- In Uganda, for example, 6 in 10 girls and 7 in 10 boys experience physical violence during childhood.* In many cases, parents struggle to provide basic needs such as food and shelter, which can contribute to cycles of stress and violence within families.
-
At Mukisa, we support programs that not only focus on the child’s healthy development but also on supporting parents and guardians, and the ecosystem surrounding them. By working with families and caregivers, these programs help create safe, nurturing environments where children can grow and thrive. For example, the organization we support in Uganda, in many ways, functions like a community hub similar to a Boys and Girls Club, offering programs that support the entire family.

Many government and nonprofit programs focus primarily on maternal and infant health. In Uganda, Mukisa identified a critical gap in support for pre-school children between the ages of 2 and 5. Our programs provide children with a safe place to play, learn, and develop essential early skills.
We also recognize that improving a child’s development requires strengthening the entire support system around them. In addition to services for children, Mukisa supports programs that provide activities such as skills development for vulnerable single mothers, as well as early childhood development awareness for community members.
The programs encourage meaningful engagement between caregivers and children, with the long-term goal of changing behaviors and strengthening families. By doing so, we aim to improve the physical, social, and emotional well-being of young children so they can grow into responsible contributors to their communities.

At Mukisa we support organizations that honor the unique rhythm of every child. Where children have access to programs that create a safe prepared environment where children explore through art, music, sports and play and programs that encourage environmental sustainability.
Additionally, we appreciate organizations that support a child’s surrounding ecosystem, focus on parent child engagement and that share parenting and childcare best practices to improve long term early childhood care giving at home.
Examples of programs developed in Uganda and may be localized to other communities include Mukisa Community Membership, Mukisa Vibes, and Practical Parenting and Mukisa Daycare.
Guided by the community and the needs of our members and our neighbors, we are always seeking to develop and implement new programs. If you have a special skill or ideas to help us evolve, please let us know by emailing joyce@mukisacommunity.org.

Mukisa Community Facts & Figures
Mukisa Community recognizes that meaningful change takes time. Our work focuses on partnering with communities to empower them with the knowledge and tools needed to improve the physical, social, and emotional health of pre-school children. We place strong emphasis on supporting healthy child development, especially in environments where basic needs are often unmet and where shifting long-standing generational norms requires patience and consistency.
In Uganda, we measure our progress through three key indicators:
- Members – the number of children attending our programs
- Caregivers – the number of parents or caregivers participating in our parenting sessions
- Awareness – the number of community members reached with information and practical tools to support healthy early childhood development
